“Oh, this is lovely!” That is the typical reaction of guests being shown into these luxury self-catering cottages. Everything speaks of quality: from the mahogany four-poster beds to the fixtures and fittings in the kitchens. Naturally, they have all been graded “five stars” by the Scottish Tourist Board and that means they are viewed as “exceptional,” “world class.”

“Cottage” here doesn’t tell the half of it, for all are spacious houses decorated in an elegant, modern, country-house style. They have full central heating and en suite bathrooms to every bedroom. Finch and Bluebird are particularly spacious and have real flame/ gas fireplaces with marble surrounds. Peacock even has a piano. All the master bathrooms have spa baths - for a rejuvenating “massage” after a day walking the hills - as well as powerful showers.

Each superb cottage has its own fenced garden for cocktails and barbeques and guests have free access to the beautiful grounds of the mansion house: children particularly enjoy feeding the ducks, geese, hens and peacocks in “chickenopolis” and there are striking views of Goatfell from the front lawn. The backdrop is the extensive Kilmichael woods.
